We are keen to pick up on where we left off and make the CPTU even better in 2023.

All our podium winners have been invited back, including South Australian Brett Goldfinch, who won the CPTU - Concrete Boot 🥾 to the fastest accumulative time for the CPTU120/10.

He needs to return so he can bring back the trophy!

We’ve taken your feedback to heart, updated the website, and now included the “Cheat Sheet” of the course for each of the events. We’ve also uploaded the results with UTMB, ITRA and course is accredited with ITRA and Trace de Trails, NB Trace de trails, and UTRA uses a different algorithm for our watches and can give a different distance or vertical gain and loss. The Europeans believe Australia is flat, and we constantly fight to have our events ranked tougher to better indicate the actual gradient on the course. In Europe or Japan, mountains the climbs are 20km long, therefore easy to measure; our courses in Australia are undulating, therefore, over time, tougher on the body, but the ITRA and Trace De Trails take off the tops and the toughs of each of our climbs if they are not over a certain distance.

CPTU120 - Keeps the 5 ITRA Ranking and is only one of a few events in Australia, with this ranking for a distance of around 100km. The other one is the Brisbane Trail Ultra - BTU110.

There has been a lot of talk about TARGA Rally Car Event and its effect on the CPTU.

We’ve discussed with Targa, the Councils, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Special Event Police, Traffic Management, and Our Medical Team, and we all believe the two events can coexist on the same weekend. We prefer to stay on this weekend out of respect to the other trail running events in Tropical North Queensland in August and September.

What TARGA have told us is the following;

Kuranda Range will be closed for 4 hours on Saturday 2nd of September between 08:00 am and 12:00 pm.

Our checkpoints will be in place, and CP1 Speewah will be Bumping Out. Therefore there is no impact on our event. We have also confirmed that the TARGA course also does not cross our event. Please take a look at the Map Below.

Inside Scoop for Car Fans

TARGA will be on Copperlude Dam between 12 noon and 6:30 pm (TBC) on Friday, the 1st of September, if you and your support crew want to catch the action then as well.

Above is the map of the TARGA Course; our event passes under the Kennedy HWY. We’ve been explicitly told by Transport and Main Roads, TMR that all TARGA cars, when they complete their course, are subject to standard road rules and will be travelling according to the Traffic Management Plan for our event.

In the event of a medical emergency at the CPTU - We’ve also been told at TARGA will stop their race and allow for medical vehicles to traverse the range between Kuranda and Cairns. Our medical Team will be on hand to assist as will Queensland Ambulance Services.

Support Crews who are looking after the CPTU80 and CPTU20 Runners will have to drop their runners off at the start line and head up the range to beat the road closures at 08:00 am. I will receive exact details of this. They will then have to stay in Kuranda until Noon. They are welcome to watch the TARGA event until their runner needs them.

CPTU80 Support Crews can drive the back way via Mt Malloy to make it to CP5, in 1:42 Minutes compared to 1:06 if driving from Kuranda to Port Douglas.

In 2022, our first runner for the CPTU120 made it to Kuranda CP3 at 13:20 pm; this means that the Support Crew can help their runner at CP2 Kamerunga and then drive up to CP3 Kuranda as the roads will be open by this time. We highly recommend that you pack a “Drop Bag” for CP3 Kuranda in case your support crew is delayed.

Please name your drop bag below to ensure your bag goes to the right location. We had to Uber a Bag between Port Douglas and Cairns at the 2022 event.

This Information Affects the CPTU20 Runners Only.

Buses for the CPTU20 from Kuranda to Cairns will leave when the roads are open, after 12:00 pm.

Other Travel Options Between Kuranda and Cairns

Kuranda Railway Departs Kuranda at 14:00 pm and 15:30pm you can extend your stay in Kuranda and see the beautiful Butterfly Sanctuary
