Cancellation of CPTU - 2023

Dear CPTU entrants,

With the deepest regret, we have had to make the incredibly tough decision to cancel the Cairns Port Douglas Trail Ultra 2023. Athlete safety always comes first; we invest tens of thousands of dollars ensuring that our athletes are safe whilst racing on our course by employing QAS 4WD Ambulance on the course, Academy First Aid supports the QAS in off-road vehicles, as well as medics at checkpoints and finish lines; track Me Live GPS Trackers monitor your location on the CPTU course, Onetime Live timing across the course, East Coast Traffic Management, for our East Coast Traffic Management, for a traffic management plan for the event. We’ve been working closely with the Department of Main Roads, Police Special Event Services and TARGA management to ensure the events ran simultaneously without issues. We've invested in the region by promoting Tropical North Queensland as a destination for trail running for advertising on Australian Running Calendar, Trail Run Mag, Facebook and Instagram.

We are committed to the Trail Running events in Far North Queensland, and our permits be locked in for the next three years. As with all running events of this scale, we are indebted to the tireless hours of support afforded to us by the trail-running community, be it managing and volunteering at checkpoints.

Key community members have stepped forward in 2023, and we'd like to thank them for their support, Smurf and Smurfette, Trail Running Association Queensland, Adventure Equipment Cairns, and Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club. We hope to continue to support the community in Tropical North Queensland. We thank them for their support.

CPTU work closely with the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife to ensure the safety of runners and for the 2023 Cairns Port Douglas Trail Ultra, we foresee many factors that could compromise this. One component is the increased staff and volunteers required to meet these safety requirements. In addition, critical roles of managers and volunteers for the entire 30-hour duration of the event at the locations between Cairns, Kuranda and Port Douglas are required.

Therefore we had to make the awful decision to cancel the event.

What does this mean for our entrants?
